Chrome Angel Solutions has been collaborating with Northern’s Energy and Environment team on an important initiative to tackle carbon emissions and fuel consumption across their network.
The innovative project was originally funded by through the Department for Transport’s Transport Research and Innovation Grant Programme, delivered by Connected Places Catapult, and has continued to be supported by our industry partners Northern and Angel Trains.

Chrome Angel Solutions worked in partnership with Northern, Angel Trains, Auticon and Smart Rail Services to develop a new tool that mathematically models driving style and route characteristics to estimate the expected fuel consumption and CO2 emissions for a given route.
By accurately modelling the complex relationship between driving behaviour and train performance, the tool provides actionable insights that can help reduce environmental impact, deliver sustainability improvements and reduce operational costs.
Northern is currently testing the solution with their Driver Training Team to explore how these insights can support optimising driving styles to lower emissions and improve fuel efficiency.

As part of our commitment to delivering responsible innovation and social value, this project was delivered in in partnership with Data Scientists from Auticon, an award winning social enterprise dedicated to improving careers opportunities for autistic adults.
