Inspiring the Next Generation of Rail Talent Through Serious Games

Chrome Angel Solutions, alongside Angel Trains and Community Rail Lancashire, recently introduced a group of Pre Interns at Coleman Training Development to the future of rail training through Serious Games — immersive, technology-based experiences that combine learning with interactive gameplay.

Coleman Training Development is a Bradford-based organisation specialising in supported internships and work readiness programmes for neurodivergent young adults and individuals with learning disabilities or difficulties. Founded in 2023, the non-profit acts as a bridge between education and the workplace.

During the session, Mark Robinson from Chrome Angel Solutions, Graham Dutton from Angel Trains, and Catherine Kingdom from Community Rail Lancashire showcased how VR and interactive simulations are being used to help rail employees develop skills through realistic workplace scenarios.

Using tablets and VR headsets, the interns explored how Serious Games can recreate real-world situations in a safe and engaging environment. The simulations demonstrated scenarios that rail staff may encounter in their daily roles, including supporting passengers, responding to challenging situations, and handling customer queries.

The group also experienced the Rail 200 Guard Challenge, a Serious Game developed by Chrome Angel Solutions in collaboration with Angel Trains and South Western Railway. Created for Railway 200 events, the arcade-style game gives players the opportunity to experience the role of a train Guard while learning about railway history and the importance of supporting customers. Players score points by responding quickly and effectively to customer needs.

The session also provided insight into how Serious Games are created, exploring the combination of technology, game design, subject expertise, and industry collaboration required to deliver immersive learning experiences. The interns finished by interacting with an AI character within the simulation, taking on the role of a Guard and managing a challenging passenger situation.

For many of the interns, the workshop opened up new possibilities for how interests in gaming and technology can translate into meaningful careers within the rail industry.

By combining innovation, learning, and collaboration, Serious Games are helping shape the future of workforce training — making it possible to practise real-world skills in realistic, engaging, and safe digital environments.
